Welcome to Sustainable Amesbury

Council listens to Sustainable Amesbury

Four sites totalling 840 acres of farmland in and around Amesbury proposed for rezoning for development have been left out of the draft Local Plan for 2020 to 2038. The move suggests that Wiltshire Council has listened to our strong arguments against further development and has agreed that Amesbury has expanded enough.

The new draft Plan for housing and employment development across the county includes provision for 120 new homes to be built in Amesbury to 2038. However, an additional 410 homes have either already been built between 2020 to 2022 or are planned to be built on land already zoned (mainly the completion of Kings Gate). None of the sites proposed by the developers at Viney’s Farm, High Post North and South, nor, the extension of Solstice Park are included for any development.

While the publication of the draft Local Plan is a positive step forward, it does not end the matter. The Plan has yet to go through the final stages of approval and be adopted, expected in December 2024. Meanwhile, Sustainable Amesbury will continue to monitor the process and will intervene if the landowners challenge the draft Plan.

The key draft Plan documents for Amesbury can be read at the links on the Reports tab on this website, and the whole suite of documents is available from the Council's website.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our campaign to date and will keep this website up to date with any further developments.

Unsustainable development

Amesbury has seen more than 1,600 new homes and a huge distribution centre built in less than 20 years.

Our medical, educational and transport infrastructure is already over-burdened. It cannot cope with more building on this scale.

It would damage and destroy important features of our unique landscape.

It would destroy a large recreational area popular with walkers, runners, horse riders, fishing folk, local families and tourists.

Amesbury is the wrong place to continue to develop on this scale
